Guilt-Free Snacking May 2, 2012, 3:52 p.m.

A lads night in, traditionally, consists of beer, burgers and all the bad stuff. It goes hand in hand with watching sports on the TV. Girls can be excused for thinking that the male diet is made up of bad food, even if it’s not always true. Fast food and football seem to go hand-in-hand. We’ll allow you some cheesy chips or a doner kebab on a drunken stumble on, but when inviting a group of friends over, it’s nice to pull out the big guns.

We’re not suggesting you put on a lovely spread, with platters of food and host yourself a dinner party (not unless you want to, of course). Rather than tucking into a bowl of nachos or peanuts, why not opt for something much more rich and satisfying. Snacking is, by and large, something that should be avoided. Unless of course you’re doing it the right way and not overindulging.

However, with your feet up and the game on the telly, it calls for something tasty to munch on. Stay clear of the salty option, and settle on something more nutritious. We can already hear you sigh in dismay. But, listen. All hail the sports snack mix, healthy and delicious. Wave goodbye to nachos, crisps and suchlike and welcome an alternative option. Pretzels, unsalted nuts and dried fruit. They may not provide you with the guilt-ridden, naughty, good-tasting feel that chocolate does, but it really is the better option.

Plus, you’re not limited to just the one healthy option either. There are plenty of foods perfect for nibbling on. Chop up a variety of vegetables suitable for dipping, such as carrots, cucumber, celery and peppers and serve them up with a low-fat dip. Adding herbs and spices to plain yoghurt and making yourself is preferable, but supermarket brands are fine, if they are part of a healthier living range. If you’re unsure about what tastes good, or is the best choice, why not invite one of the slim escorts from Chic round to give you a hand. Although they’re no Nigella in the kitchen, they will be happy to assist in the taste testing and sample some of your nutritious delights.

We’re not putting you on a diet, nor are we suggesting you should ditch the good (naughty) stuff all together. Just remember, too much of a good (naughty) thing, can be bad. We all end up overdoing it and by the time we’ve finished our marathon sports session, we’ve chowed down on far too much.

Introduce the healthy stuff into your system every now and then, and give those salty snacks a break. Your gut will thank you for it.
